Devorar París. Picasso, 1900-1907

Cy Twombly and Nicolas Poussin
29 de junio - 25 de septiembre de 2011

A unique exploration of contemporary artist Cy Twombly (April 25 1928 - 5 July 2011) and 17th century classical painter Nicolas Poussin (1594 -1665). This exhibition will look at these two figures side by side for the first time. Separated by three centuries the two artists nonetheless share remarkable similarities. The connections are highlighted through the key themes of Arcadia and the pastoral, Venus and Eros, anxiety and theatricality and mythological figures that are central to both artists' work. The exhibition will be accompanied by the British premiere of Tacita Dean's new 16mm film portrait of Cy Twombly, Edwin Parker (2011). As part of the exhibition, the Gallery is also extremely fortunate to have the opportunity to display Poussin's Seven Sacraments painted between 1637 and 1642 for his Roman friend and patron Cassiano dal Pozzo. As a set, Poussin’s Sacraments represent a high point in Western European art.

Devotion by Design: Italian Altarpieces before 1500
6 de julio - 2 de octubre de 2011

As part of a programme of summer shows focusing on the National Gallery’s collection, ‘Devotion by Design’ explores the function, the original location, and the development of altarpieces in Italy during the late Middle Ages and the early Renaissance. These objects furnished altars in churches and were not originally intended to hang in a gallery as we see them today. Instead, they were created for a specific sacred context, forming the focus of devotion for worshippers. Using the Gallery’s own collection, this exhibition investigates the development of altarpieces, looking at changes in form, style and type. It examines not only the evolution of their physical structure but also their relationship to their frames and to the monumental architecture that surrounded them. A small section of ‘Devotion by Design’ will be dedicated to altarpiece fragments, explaining the role different elements of altarpieces played in the overall ensemble. The exhibition examines the reasons why altarpieces came to be dismembered (often with the dissolution of religious institutions in the 18th and 19th centuries) and the methods that art historians now use to reassemble them.

Frans Hals in the Metropolitan Museum
26 de julio - 10 de octubre de 2011

The Metropolitan Museum of Art holds the most important collection of paintings in America by the celebrated Dutch artist Frans Hals (1582-1666), whose portraits and genre scenes were famous in his lifetime for their immediacy and dazzling brushwork. This exhibition will present thirteen paintings by Hals, including two lent from private collections, and several works by other Netherlandish masters. Several of the Museum's paintings by Hals are famous, especially the early Merrymakers at Shrovetide and the co-called Yonker Ramp and his sweetheart, both bequeathed to the Museum by Benjamin Altman in 1913. Alson included in the exhibition will be two loans from private collections in New York -the small, exquisite Portrait of Samuel Ampzing, on copper, and the well-kwnon Fisher Girl. A selection of other Dutch paintings from the Museum's collection and a few engravings will set Hals's work in the context of his native Haarlen amd will help clarify how exceptional his animated poses and virtuoso brushwork were at the time. A portrait by Manet, inspired by Hals, will also demonstrate how strongly Hals anticipated impressionist efffects.

Josef Danhauser. Pictorical Narratives
22 de junio - 25 de septiembre de 2011

The focus of this exhibition is on Josef Danhauser (1805-1845), the storyteller. Danhauser was unrivalled when it came to translating the content of literary text, be it of a historical, religious, or purely narrative nature, into pictorial ‘language’. Spectators are thus enabled to extract entire stories from his pictures, provided that they are willing to look closely. Gestures, facial expressions, and movements are the vehicle of these pictorial narratives; there is a lot of humour and daring satire behind them, while they particularly rely on the close observation of people and the capability of visualising minor human flaws in a pointed or maybe even exaggerated manner. William Hogarth’s series The Rake’s Progress and Marriage à la mode, with their narrative wealth, rich allusions, and sharp wit, had a great impact on Josef Danhauser. Danhauser was to refer to them throughout his life, using his models in a subtle and discrete manner for his own compositions. They provided the basis of his most important works, such as The Rich Debaucher, The Soup for the Poor, and The Reading of the Will.
